The Spirit of God descending like a dove…

Standard

Scripture:  12 After Jesus was baptized, he came up from the water and behold, the heavens were opened (for him), and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove (and) coming upon him.  (Matthew 3:16)

Observation:  This verse jumped out at me from the 3rd chapter of the Gospel of Matthew today because of an experience of faith that I had some years ago at a Methodist church in Cocoa Beach, FL.  It was a time when I was home from college for vacation and my Mom and Dad wanted to take the family to church.  There was a lot of healing needed in our family then, maybe there still is.  Truth is, there is always a need for healing in every family.  I am sure at the time that I really didn’t want to go to church with them, knowing everything they had put the family through, but I went anyway.  To make a long story short, I saw a dove in a stained glass window in the top corner of the ceiling of that church that had me enraptured for a little while.  I remember in that moment being completely at peace.  By the way, no one in my family remembers there being a dove in that window and I pretty sure it was just there for me.

Application:  I remember not being ready to answer the Lord’s call at that time, because I was not prepared for what his call might mean.  I must remember that there are times when God is going to call me, and I will not be able to pick the time or the place.  I hope that I am ready when he calls me again, and this time I hope to answer with a resounding, “Alleluiah!” or “Amen!”  I am thankful for God sending his son into this world and announcing his mission and mine with a dove descending.

Prayer:  Lord, please continue to send down your Spirit to guide and protect all of us that are proclaiming your Good News by word and deed today and for the rest of our lives.  I ask this, as always, in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the holy Spirit.  Amen.
