Reading: 1 If then you were raised with Christ, seek what is above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Think of what is above, not of what is on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. 2 Put to death, then, the parts of you that are earthly: immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and the greed that is idolatry. 3 Stop lying to one another, since you have taken off the old self with its practices 6 and have put on the new self, which is being renewed, for knowledge, in the image of its creator. (Colossians 3:1-3,5,9-10)
Observation: After reading the footnotes a few times to this 2nd reading from the Mass readings for today, I realized that the reason that we can put away the earthly things is because Christ died to allow us to share in his divine nature. Man was created in God’s likeness, but Christ dying on the cross gives us the opportunity to share in his image and not just his likeness. If we take off the old self with all its practices, we make room for God’s grace to work and create us into a new creature.
Personification: Kindness – The strength of Christ’s love which leads us to a greater service. This is the divine, to show the fruit of kindness to everyone. No matter the circumstances, I feel called today and everyday for the rest of my life to display the fruit of kindness to everyone I meet. Hopefully, this includes inside the church and outside the church, because I would like to take this kindness to new people, as well as the ones that have already heard the call to service.
Prayer: Lord, help me to show the fruit of kindness to everyone I meet, which will lead me and my family closer to you by giving us more opportunities to serve others. I ask this, as always, in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the holy Spirit. Amen.
