Gift:  Understanding – With the gift of understanding, we comprehend how we need to live as a follower of Jesus Christ. A person with understanding is not confused by all the conflicting messages in our culture about the right way to live.

Reading:  Rejoice, O young man, while you are young and let your heart be glad in the days of your youth.  (Ecclesiastes 11:9)

Pay attention to what I am telling you. The Son of Man is to be handed over to men.”  (Luke 9:44)

Observation:  It strikes me that today’s first reading is from the book of Ecclesiastes telling young men to stay young at heart and don’t be troubled about things of this world.  However, keep in mind that God will bring judgement to every one of us.  In the Gospel reading, Jesus tells his disciples something that they cannot understand in their time because it is not time for them to understand.  We can understand it though, because it has already happened, and the truth that exists because of the Son of Man being handed over to men is that everyone is free to accept the truth without barrier of race, color or nationality.

Personification:  Goodness – A real desire to live a holy life, to set a good example by our conduct where we are.  It is by display the fruit of goodness that comes from the grace of God that I receive only because my Savior died for me, that I can truly be young at heart.  I originally thought the first reading was for my son, but I see now that it is for all of us.  In order to truly be alive, or young at heart, some might say, we must be able to accept the truth of the sacrifice that was made for us by Jesus Christ, who died for our sins.

Prayer:  Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me a sinner.  I ask this, as always, in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the holy Spirit.  Amen.
