Gift: Fortitude (Courage) – With the gift of courage, we overcome our fear and are willing to take risk as a follower of Jesus. A person with courage is willing to stand up for what is right in the sight of God, even if it means accepting rejection, verbal abuse, or even physical harm and death.
Reading: Those who want to be rich are falling into temptation and into a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires, which plunge them into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is the root of all evils, and some people in their desire for it have strayed from the faith and have pierced themselves with many pains. But you, man of God,* avoid all this. Instead, pursue righteousness, devotion, faith, love, patience, and gentleness.i Compete well for the faith. Lay hold of eternal life, to which you were called when you made the noble confession in the presence of many witnesses. (1 Timothy 6:9-12)
Observation: There was a video that I watched with our young adults in our Bible study group a couple of weeks ago, where satan was talking about how he loves that we have such a love of money in our culture. It was a skit put on by lifechurch.tv, but the reason it was so impactful on us is because it is plausible to see satan talking in this way about the importance that we have put on money in our society. So much so, that we rely on consumer debt to make our economy work.
Personification: Self-Control Today, I will try to continue to display self-control in my life as it pertains to money, and hopefully this self-control in the area of money will spill over into other areas of my life as well. It is not too difficult to control something that you don’t have much of, but I will be willing to use it for whatever needs my family may have today, without regret.
Prayer: Lord, help me to display the fruit of self-control in my life. I ask this, as always, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy Spirit. Amen.
